Goodbye, Pork Pie Hat
Description
The fifth selection on Lab '67, Tom Boras' arrangement of Charles Mingus' tribute to Lester Young. John Monaghan is featured as a bass soloist. On the back of the album cover, Boras writes:

"The chart itself is a memoriam for Lester Young. It features Ray Loeckle (tenor), John Monaghan (bass), and Ed Soph (drums). I tried to create as free a vehicle for improvisation as possible. For the most part, the harmony employed is an experiment in parallelism, and the orchestration was intended to extend the scope of the jazz ensemble.

"With the depth of musicianship in this band, a writer feels grateful for the amount of freedom he has to conceiveably write anything he wishes, with the knowledge that it will be played. The black notes on the page are not the sound, they are only a direction. It is the feeling for the notes which make the sound, this is of the importance, and it feels good."
