ALLEN, ANN (1832-1889): Ann Allen was born into slavery in 1832. As a girl, Ann lived and worked on Woodson Palmer Allen’s plantation in Woods-Shop, Chambers, Alabama. While enslaved, Ann married Sam, also a slave on the Allen plantation. After their marriage, Sam and Ann had eleven children; Sandy (1853), Martha (1854), Harriet (1856), Nick (1856), Simon (1859), Jose Ann (1861), Jennie (1863), Thomas “Manus” (1867), Eliza (1870), Tilda (1871), and Mary (1873). After emancipation, Sam and Ann took on their former master’s last name and worked as tenant farmers on land adjacent to the Allen plantation. In the early 1880s, Ann and her entire family left Chambers County, Alabama and headed west along the newly founded rail line that ran from Chambers County, Alabama to Denton County, Texas.
Once they arrived in Pilot Point, the Allen family rented land and worked as farm laborers under their own account and made a decent living for themselves. Sam and Ann lived next to their son Sandy, his wife Churry (1857), and their two children; Sam (1873) and Harriet (1876). Only a few years after their arrival in Pilot Point, Ann died of unknown circumstances in 1889. Ann was survived by her husband, children, and numerous grandchildren. Ann was buried in St. John’s Cemetery in Pilot Point, Texas. Two years after Ann’s death, her daughter Matilda passed away and was buried beside her mother. The two share a headstone St. John’s Cemetery.
