Booker T. Washington High School
Dallas Colored High School was established in June if 1892 by the Dallas Board of Education. It expanded in 1911 as the “Dallas Colored High School” until it was renamed upon the opening of its new building on October 30, 1922. By 1931, enrollment had risen to over 2,100 students and double-day sessions were instituted to accommodate them. Booker T. Washington High School remained the only high school in Dallas for African American students until Lincoln High School was built in 1939 with money from the Public Works Administration.
Booker T. Washington High Schools became an arts magnet school in 1976, and still stands at its original location on Flora Street in Dallas Texas. The School is a Texas Historical Landmark.
Alumni of the school prior to integration include Baseball Hall of Fame Member Ernie Banks, Negro Leagues pitcher William Blair, and journalist Julia Scott Reed.
