George Truitt
TRUITT, GEORGE (1859-1938): George Truitt was born on December 25, 1859, to John and Martha Truitt in Troup Factory, Troup, Georgia. George Truitt married Lou Smith on November 19, 1877, in Chambers County, Alabama. By 1882, George and Lou had three children; Mike (b. 1877), George Jr. (b. 1880), and Lucy (b. 1882). In 1883, the family relocated to Pilot Point, Texas. In Pilot Point, George and Lou had seven more children—Mattie (b. 1884), Amanda (b. 1886), Mary (b. 1888), John Willie (b. 1890), Leonard (1892), Ida (b. 1894) and Agle Lee (b. 1899).
Upon moving to Texas, George had very little, but he rented land and worked as a farmer under his own account. [1883 Tax Roll]. Shortly after the move to Pilot Point, George acquired a couple of horses and was later able to purchase a buggy. The Truitts lived on the same plot of land as the Shears family (who also moved to the region from Chambers County, AL) and attended St. John’s Church in Pilot Point. Tragedy struck the Truitt family in the 1910s as tuberculosis ravaged Pilot Point. Eight members of the Truitt family succumbed to the disease within three years: Lou, Mike, Lucy, Amanda, Mary, John Willie, Ida, and Agle Lee. Many of the Truitts were interred in St. John’s cemetery, but some were laid to rest in other African American cemeteries in Pilot Point. After this family tragedy, George, now a widower, lived with his son Leonard, continued to rent his farm, and worked as a farmer until his death in1938. George Truitt died of a cerebral hemorrhage on July 16, 1938, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery in Pilot Point. George Truitt was survived by his sons George Jr. and Leonard and daughter Mattie.
