TRUITT, LUCY SMITH (March 1862-July 27, 1917):  Lucy “Lou” Smith was born in Georgia in 1862 to Gilbert and Lucy Smith. Lou married the 20-year-old George Truitt in Chambers County, Alabama on November 17, 1877. Their first child, Mike was born in Chambers County, Alabama in 1877, followed shortly by George Jr. (b. 1880) and Lucy (b. 1882). In 1883, George and Lou relocated their family to Texas, settling in Pilot Point. There, Lou gave birth to Mattie (b. 1884), Amanda (b. 1886), Mary (b. 1888), John Willie (b. 1890), Leonard (1892), Ida (b. 1894), and Agle Lee (b. 1899). In Pilot Point, George rented land and worked as a farmer, and made a decent living. In the 1910s, the Truitts lost eight members of their family to tuberculosis, and one doctor even noted “the 8th death[s] in the same home and the same cause and same family in 3 years” on Agle Lee’s death certificate. Lu did not escape the disease and succumbed to pulmonary tuberculosis on July 27, 1917. Lou Smith Truitt was laid to rest in Bonner Cemetery. Lou was survived by her husband George, her daughter Mattie, and her son Leonard.
