Charity Shears and PE Helm Marriage Certificate (1913)

Marriage Certificates showing two members of the St. John's Community, Charity Holloway Helm and Amos Holloway, from families with strong ties throughout Pilot Point married in 1902.

CHARITY SHEARS HOLLOWAY HELM (1883-unknown): Charity Sherrill was born in December 1883 to Risom and Harriet Sherrill in Denton County, Texas. Around the birth of Charity's younger brother Henry, the family changed their last name from Sherrill to Shears, which mirrored the name of two families living nearto the Sherrill-turned-Shears family in Pilot Point proper. By 1893, the Shears family moved two miles to the west.

While living in the St. John's community area, Charity Shears attended school and church with her neighbors. She married Amos Holloway in 1902 in a private courtroom ceremony at the Justice of the Peace. She gave birth to Horrace Holloway on Sunday, June 19, 1904 and Dewitt Holloway.  On April 18, 1913, Charity Holloway married Prince E. Helm in Clearview, Okfuskee County, Oklahoma. Prince had children from a previous marriage, as did Charity.

The new family attended the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church in Clearview, Oklahoma
