Henry Shears
SHEARS, HENRY (1886 - 1911): Henry Shears was born Henry Sherrill on January 27, 1886, in Pilot Point, Texas. He was the third child born to Risom Sherrill Shears (b. 1857) and Harriet Davis (b. 1854). Henry Shears lived with his immediate family to the east of Pilot Point and attended school for at least three years prior to age fourteen. The family were members of St. John's Baptist Church. Following the death of two of his siblings (date unknown) and his mother three days before Thanksgiving on November 23, 1908, Henry Shears worked as a common laborer until he contracted Tuberculosis in 1911. He was under the care of Dr. E. D. Moten beginning on August 21, 1911. Tuberculosis ravaged the intestines of Henry Shears and on September 6, 1911, he died of hemorrhagic complications related thereto. His body was prepared for burial by undertaker V. P. Shepard. Henry Shears was buried on September 7, 1911, next to his mother in St. John’s Cemetery with a small headstone engraved “H.S."
